La Reine’s Residence: A Heritage Renovation Masterpiece

Supported by the Île-de-France Region, ADEME, and the Seine-Normandy Water Agency

Significant reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, enhanced architectural aesthetics, and improved living conditions.

Short Background of the Fund

La Reine’s Residence, originally built in 1959, underwent a comprehensive renovation to address its energy inefficiency and outdated appearance, highlighting the potential of combining historical preservation with modern sustainability practices to create a living space that is both energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing. The project aimed to enhance the building’s architectural appeal while significantly reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions through the installation of a new “outer skin” incorporating thermal insulation, sun protection, and adjustable sunshade blinds. Key components included enhanced insulation for external walls and roof, a hybrid ventilation system coupled with a new condensing gas boiler, a rainwater recovery system for water retention and irrigation, and an accessible terrace with shared gardens promoting urban agriculture and biodiversity. The renovation reduced greenhouse gas emissions from 61 kg CO2 eq/m²/year to 17 kg CO2 eq/m²/year, demonstrating how modern technology and sustainable practices can be harmoniously integrated into historical buildings. Supported by various regional and national agencies, the project received comprehensive financial and technical assistance, with a participative consultation process engaging co-owners and enhancing community cohesion. La Reine’s Residence stands as a model for heritage renovations that combine architectural enhancement with sustainability, showcasing the potential of energy-efficient renovations to transform and modernize historical buildings while significantly reducing their environmental footprint and serving as an inspiration for future projects aiming to achieve similar goals.
